Death Toll Rises, New Earthquake Catalog Developed

Magnitude 7.4 earthquake causes widespread devastation in Izmit, Turkey. Over 17,000 people have been confirmed dead, making it one of the deadliest earthquakes in recent history.

The earthquake struck on Friday at 3:02 AM local time. The epicenter was located near the western Turkish city of Izmit, about 100 kilometers (62 miles) east of Istanbul.

The earthquake was felt as far away as Athens, Greece, and Sofia, Bulgaria. It caused widespread damage to buildings and infrastructure in Izmit and the surrounding areas.

Rescue workers are searching for survivors, but the death toll is expected to rise further. The Turkish government has declared a state of emergency and is sending aid to the affected areas.

In light of the recent earthquake, a new local and updated historical earthquake catalog has been prepared for İzmir and its immediate surroundings. This catalog includes data on earthquakes that have occurred in the region since 1688, including the devastating Smyrna earthquake of July 1688. The catalog will help researchers and policymakers better understand the seismic hazard in the region and develop measures to mitigate its impact.
