North Korea Blames Uncle Sam for Army Deserters
Army deserters crossed into South Korea for various reasons
Today, North Korea’s state-run news agency lashed out at the United States. North Korea’s KCNA news agency blames a new wave of army desertions on the US. But that’s not all. The KCNA accuses US soldiers of enticing the North Korean soldiers to defect. In addition, the KCNA says US troops staged a recent movie about such defections. This according to KCNA is a clear attempt by the US to destabilize North Korea and spark a war.
South Korea says at least 10 North Korean soldiers defected and crossed the border in 2022.
The KCNA article, which was carried by the official Korean Central News Agency, is the latest in a series of attacks by North Korea on the United States. South Korean officials first reported the desertions last week. According to South Korea’s Yonhap news agency, at least 10 North Korean soldiers have defected to the South this year. Many left their posts along the heavily fortified border between the two Koreas. Officials say the flow of deserters increased after North Korea relaxed its Covid lockdown measures and a popular Netflix series about defectors aired.
The KCNA article referred to an American film called “The Interview”.
The article says that the film, which was released in 2014, is about a fictional interview between an American talk show host and a North Korean defector. It alleges that the film depicts the defector as a hero and encourages other North Koreans to follow in their footsteps. “The Interview” angered North Korea when it was released. North Korea accused the United States of making the film to insult their supreme leader, Kim Jong-un. US officials denied those charges.
North Korea has a long history of blaming the United States for its problems.
North Korea often blames the US for its economic problems, its political isolation, and its nuclear weapons program. The United States has maintained a military presence in South Korea since the 1950s, when the two Koreas fought a war. North Korea views the US presence as a threat to its security. KCNA did not provide any evidence to support its claims that the US is encouraging North Korean soldiers to defect.
South Korea’s Unification Ministry said it could not confirm the KCNA report.
The ministry is responsible for relations with North Korea. The ministry has said that it is looking into the defections and will provide more information when it is available. The United States has not commented on the KCNA report. The US military has a policy of not commenting on intelligence matters.
The KCNA report is likely to further strain relations between the United States and North Korea. The two countries have been engaged in a tense standoff over North Korea’s nuclear program. The US has been trying to pressure North Korea to give up its nuclear weapons, but North Korea has refused. The KCNA report suggests that North Korea is not interested in improving relations with the US.
